2024 Program
The 2024 Amgen Scholars Program hosted 13 scholars of Asian nations from 7 June to 3 August.
13 laboratories over eight affiliations including Graduate School of Medicine, Pharmaceutical Sciences, Engineering, Biostudies, Advanced Integrated Studies in Human Survivability, Institute of Advanced Energy, Institute for Life and Medical Sciences, and Institute for Integrated Cell-Material Sciences, hosted the scholars and provided them with research guidance.
In between research activities, the scholars took part in sightseeing tours of Kyoto City, discovered genuine Japanese culture, visited laboratories on the Yoshida and Katsura campuses, and attended a seminar of Admission Assistance Office. Through those events, the scholars were given opportunities to become aware of the charms of Kyoto City and Kyoto University.
On 31 July, Kyoto Symposium was held to present the outcome of their research at the University, and both oral and poster presentations were enthusiastically received.
On 1 and 2 August, Asia Symposium was held at the University of Tokyo with the participation of five host institutions of the Amgen Asia Program, where all scholars from each university gave poster presentations and two representatives from each of the five participating universities gave oral presentations.
At the banquet on the final day, the best poster awards were presented, with three Kyoto University scholars sweeping the first three places.
During this program, the scholars engaged in research activities that could not be realized elsewhere in a state-of-the-art research facility and environment, furthermore, it seems that some scholars had unexpected encounters with research topics in their host laboratories. We are sure that their experience at Kyoto University would be an outstanding presence in their scientific careers.

2023 Program
Kyoto University welcomed 23 Amgen Scholars from around the world to its 2023 program. The students spent two months in 22 laboratories in 11 of the university’s academic departments (Graduate School of Medicine, Graduate School of Engineering, Graduate School of Agriculture, Graduate School of Energy Sciences, Graduate School of Biostudies, Graduate School of Advanced Integrated Studies in Human Survivability, Institute for Chemical Research, Institute of Advanced Energy, Institute for Life and Medical Sciences, Center for iPS cell Research and Application, and Institute For Integrated Cell-Material Sciences).
In addition to their research activities, the students were able to take Japanese language classes, experience Japanese culture, and visit different laboratories to experience the latest research equipment and methods. On the final day of the program, each student gave poster and flash talk presentations summarizing their research outcomes. The Amgen Scholars Asia Symposium was held in Singapore and was attended by a total of 108 Amgen Scholars from the National University of Singapore, Tsinghua University, the University of Tokyo, and Kyoto University. The symposium featured poster presentations by all attendees and oral presentations by three selected Amgen Scholars from each university. It also included expert lectures, a panel discussion on career development, and lively question-and-answer and discussion sessions throughout.
The Amgen Scholars Program is expected to provide the participating students with an experience that will serve as the first step in their career paths as scientists.
